About the coffee

Laurina is considered to be one of the most exotic varieties. This coffee is not that easy to produce, but it is full of interesting facts that arouse a lot of passion in the owners. Laurina has a very special, long bean shape and exotic notes when processed correctly. Perhaps the most interesting feature is their low caffeine content, which is 50% lower than most other Arabica varieties. Read more about Laurina here.

The cherries are picked by hand, then they are sorted to remove so-called "floaters" and other damaged cherries. The natural method is for the whole cherry to be dried in the sun on a patio or in African beds, as opposed to the washed or honey method, which involves removing the pulp before drying. Since the Laurina cherry is smaller and thinner than other varieties, the natural drying process takes less time, only around 9 days with constant movement by hand.

About the farm

Santa Eduviges is a third generation company. It was founded in 1959 by Clarindo Vargas in Sabanilla Alajuela after he started growing coffee in 1929. His son, Norman Vargas, continued the company's growth with the acquisition of new farms and facilities. Today the project is led by his sons German and Rodrigo Vargas.

The current owners are known in Costa Rica as the largest producer family in the country. They have an extraordinary knowledge of agronomic techniques with a scientific approach and an impeccable way of caring for their coffee plants. They also invest in some other activities like coffee tours and their own roast coffee line.
