To become a verified Q grader, a very thorough examination and training must be completed.
Examinees must prove that they can evaluate the physical and sensory characteristics of a coffee.
The Q Grader certification program was established in 2003 by The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI). Since then, cupping protocols have become highly standardized around the world. There are two different certifications: Q-grader for Arabica beans and R-grader for Robusta beans.
