A demitasse is a small cup for various coffee specialties with a capacity of about 60 to 90 ml. It is usually made of porcelain or ceramic and can also be available with a decorative metal frame made of glass. The term "demitasse" comes from French and translates to "half cup," while the word "cup" itself is a loanword from French, originally from Arabic or Persian. Demitasses are often used for mocha, espresso, or Turkish coffee, served in smaller portions to emphasize the intense flavor and higher caffeine content of these specialty coffees. Although some specialty coffees are designed specifically for demitasses, they can be enjoyed in larger cups if desired, as there are variations such as double espresso that no longer fit in a demitasse.
