Similar to cigarettes, coffee is subject to a special excise tax in Germany. For roasted coffee, this coffee tax amounts to 2.19 euros per kilogram. The roots of this tax date back to the 17th century. Currently, only Germany, Belgium and Denmark levy a coffee tax in Europe.
