About this coffee

Our Decaf Espresso comes from the Quindio region of Western Colombia. The washed Arabica beans from the varietals Caturra and Castillo were cultivated on the Lopez family farm as well as 10 other neighbouring farms. The beans were processed directly at origin using the Sugar Cane decaffeination method. This method involves putting green coffee through a steam bath in order to open the beans pores. The beans are then washed with water and ethyl acetate (a compound comprising of ethanol that is produced by fermenting sugar cane and acetic acid). This mixture extracts the caffeine from the beans. After decaffeination the beans are once again steamed and washed to remove any remaining residue before being cleaned and dried. As sugar cane is cultivated throughout Colombia this decaffeination process is ideal for farmers and can be carried out directly at origin. The sugar cane process protects the cell structure of the beans so that the characteristics of the coffee are still present after processing. This coffee has a round body with notes of sweet grapes, making it perfect for any brewing method.
